The Art of Suffering

November 8, 2021
New at TWO TWO

Halim Flowers’ story is one of despair, injustice, struggle, and eventual triumph.  Wrongfully incarcerated in 1997 at just 16 years old for being an accomplice in a felony murder, he was tried as an adult, and sentenced to a term of 40 years to life.  During his incarceration, Halim discovered his love for all things art, from literature to poetry to painting, and transcended his story of suffering into works of monumental beauty and supreme hope.

In 2019, after serving 22 years behind bars, during which time he published eleven books spanning genres from poetry, self-help, and even his own memoir “Making of a Menace, Contrition of a Man,” he was at last released from prison and into society.  His transformative struggle was even documented in Kim Kardashian West’s powerful documentary, “The Freedom Project.”

Flowers is best-known for his raw and vivid acrylic paintings on canvas that are as poignant as his story itself.  Combining striking imagery with vibrant words and colors, the self-taught artist expresses an uncompromising freedom and spirit that bears no equal, except for maybe the consummate street icon, Jean-Michel Basquiat himself.  Pieces like “Dichotomy of Privilege” and “Decor of Nothing” use eclectic mixed media to provide vital commentary on social injustice and consumer greed.  His compelling work transcends all borders of race, religion, class, and culture to exemplify the interconnected-ness of all people, through love and understanding.  In Flowers’ own words, “Love is the Antibody.”

His art has been exhibited at the MOMA PS1 in Queens, as well as several other renowned galleries across the globe.  Furthermore, he is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Halcyon Art Lab and Echoing Green fellowship awards, has been a guest lecturer at various prestigious universities and conferences, and has even performed with Kanye West at his popular “Sunday Service.”  Recently awarded with the famous Eaton DC Hotel Artist-in-Residency, Halim continues to live and work in Washington, D.C., spreading his mission of love and hope to all humanity amidst these tenuous times of adversity and tribulation.

TWO TWO is thrilled to announce our exciting collaboration with yet another artistic visionary of the streets, continuing to transform not just art, but humanity itself.
